Spotlight on NYC Private Schools: Marymount School of New York

November 23, 2016

Marymount School of New York is an all-girls, private Catholic school. It is a college preparatory school focused on the development of lifelong skills of critical thinking and problem solving.

While Marymount is rooted in Catholic tradition, the school welcomes students of all backgrounds and faiths. It encourages students to develop and nurture their own spiritual identity while respecting those with differing views. The religious aspect of the curriculum focuses on teaching students about social justice and various religious traditions, scripture, and moral/ethical questions. All students take time to reflect during weekly chapel services, masses, class retreats and service programs. The religious program also includes preparation for the sacraments of First Eucharist, Reconciliation and Confirmation.

Part of Marymount’s mission is service learning. Service learning is a method of teaching, learning and reflecting that combines academic work and philanthropy in the community. The activities completed during service learning support the key principles of Catholic Social Teaching.

In order to apply to Marymount’s lower school, you must start by filling out the online application. After the application and a $70 application fee have been processed, the office will contact you to schedule a tour and interview. The parent tour is 60 minutes and the parent interview is 40 minutes. As part of the application process, the student will participate in a playgroup for 60 minutes. During this playgroup, a School Readiness Test (SRT) will be administered.

Additional materials that need to be submitted include a reference letter, a teacher reference and a school report. There are different deadlines for application. Your student may apply early decision if she has a sibling currently attending Marymount or if she is a legacy.
